ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Smart Commute – North Toronto, Vaughan is a dynamic award-winning not-for-profit organization. Our mandate is to improve commuter options and to reduce traffic congestion in our service areas. We partner with local employers, post-secondary institutions, property managers, and other organizations to provide transportation demand management (TDM) programs that help employees and students reduce drive-alone trips that result in traffic gridlock, smog, greenhouse gas emissions and other costs to the environment, community and economy.

Our core activities include developing, launching and monitoring TDM programs for medium- to large- sized organizations. We promote a menu of options for commuters, such as transit, ride-matching, shuttle buses, vanpooling, telecommuting, cycling and walking.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

- Researches and identifies business development opportunities for the organization, with a view to bringing new employers into the Smart Commute program
- Actively recruits new employers to the Smart Commute program: In partnership with the Executive Director (ED), outreaches to potential new partners, develops and delivers recruitment presentations, and leads recruitment meetings
- In coordination with ED, negotiates employer workplans and Metrolinx Employer Acknowledgement Agreements with new and existing partners
- Leverages relationships with existing partners to connect with new employers and innovative business opportunities
- Leads the development of innovative TDM programs and services. For example: shuttles, vanpools, carpool parking
- Works closely with Program Managers to support programming with new and existing partners
- Represents Smart Commute NTV at appropriate consultations and meetings. Actively consults with and conveys issues of Smart Commute champions through relevant meetings and consultations
- Assists the ED with public policy and government relations – representing Smart Commute NTV at relevant meetings, consultations and other industry events
- Regularly prepares budgets and leads the quantitative reporting process to major funders
- Works closely with the ED on strategic outreach initiatives
- Supports the ED with operational matters including legal, insurance, bookkeeping and procurement processes
- Supports the ED with Human Resources matters such as employee benefits, employee contracts, staff hiring and training, and payroll
- Drafts progress reports for Smart Commute NTV Board of Directors where required
- Works with ED to develop and maintain relationships with key funders and vendors
- Works with ED on organizational standards and development, including strategic planning
- Oversees special projects as required
- Supports the development of the Annual Report
- Provides administrative support as necessary (arranges meetings, prepares and sends correspondence, develops mailing lists, files, enters data into Excel, Access, takes meeting minutes)

QUALIFICATIONS

The Business Manager’s role is vital to the success of Smart Commute NTV and is best suited to an energetic, positive self-starter who possesses the following qualifications:

- A Minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant senior program management or business development experience or equivalent
- Undergraduate or graduate business degree (e.g. commerce, business management). Degrees in other fields will be considered where significant business work experience can be demonstrated
- Strong understanding and preferably experience with transportation issues; knowledge of environmental management, urban and regional planning, and transportation demand management issues is preferred
- Background in marketing and sales is an asset
- Experience working or volunteering in the not-for-profit sector is preferred
- Exceptional research skills and experience in program development, data analysis, budgeting, and monitoring/evaluation
- Sound judgment and strong entrepreneurial work ethic
- Strong interpersonal skills including excellent customer service, and experience with event planning, volunteer management, public outreach and writing funding proposals
- Confident in developing new business relationships and opportunities, and professional in working with employers and public agencies
- Strong passion for making a difference and helping people while growing with Smart Commute NTV
- Strong administrative, organizational and planning skills
- Capacity to work independently as well as to assume leadership in a team environment
- Willingness and ability to travel to locations within North Toronto and Vaughan, and occasional travel to other locations
