|Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is seeking applications for an IFEX Section Editor. IFEX is a network of organisations worldwide that defend and promote the right to free expression (www.ifex.org). The IFEX Clearing House is based in Toronto, where it is managed by IFEX member organization CJFE (www.cjfe.org).|
IFEX mission: IFEX strives for a world where freedom of expression is respected, upheld and defended. IFEX enhances its members’ work by creating distinct opportunities for capacity building, joint advocacy and increased visibility – and significantly increases IFEX’s impact through collaborative campaigning and advocacy initiatives of national, regional and global significance. IFEX’s work is comprised of four key pillars:
1. Information and Awareness-Building: to amplify and strengthen the voices of IFEX and its members by promoting and mobilizing support for advocacy work for free expression
2. Campaigns and Advocacy: to increase IFEX’s impact through collaborative campaigning and advocacy issues
3. Network Development: to leverage IFEX members’ advocacy efforts by processing, disseminating and showcasing their information and producing original analysis that is of global relevance
4. Institutional Strengthening and Sustainability: to provide opportunities that strengthen IFEX members and contribute to the development of the IFEX network as a diverse, engaged and effective international free expression community
Job purpose: IFEX Section Editors work within the IFEX Information and Awareness Raising team to write, edit, prepare and file communications pieces for timely distribution via the IFEX.org website and associated electronic communication vehicles. The priority in this role is to support IFEX’s overall communications goals by editing and creating compelling, clear content based on input from a variety of sources, including IFEX member materials; and to liaise with IFEX members within a designated region or subject area as it pertains to the creation of this material.
Duties and responsibilities of the Section Editor:
IFEX Section Editors work within the IFEX Information and Awareness Raising team to:
Write news and context-driven articles on issues of free expression for the IFEX.org website and associated electronic communication vehicles
Edit, prepare and file and occasionally translate articles, press releases, etc. from IFEX member material for timely distribution via the IFEX.org website and associated electronic communication vehicles
Assess, compare, categorise and prioritise large volumes of informational material submitted by IFEX members
Liaise with IFEX members within the designated regions and/or subject areas to assist members in enhancing the strength and value of their communication pieces
Develop and maintain relationships with IFEX members within the designated regions and/or subject areas
Monitor, collect and share with other team members media articles of interest on free expression issues within the designated regions and/or subject areas
Attend to ongoing IFEX member correspondence within the designated regions and/or subject areas
Collaborate with the Campaigns and Network Development programmes as required
Other duties as required
All IFEX staff members are expected to:
Support the strategic goals and initiatives of IFEX, as articulated and developed by the IFEX Executive Director and Manager and approved by the IFEX Council
Contribute in a positive, proactive, strategic and goal-oriented manner to the execution of IFEX programs and communications
Participate in overall IFEX programme and project development, team meetings and bi annual workplanning and budgeting
Provide input to IFEX project proposals, reports to donors and reports to members
Ensure that assigned deliverables in the IFEX workplan are on track
Represent IFEX at conferences and events as required
Ensure regular reporting of assigned work to management, Board, IFEX members, donors, and the public, as required.
Desirable experience, skills and qualifications:
University degree in related discipline (journalism, political science, international development) or equivalent experience; journalism experience preferred
Fluency in English and French. Spanish and/or Arabic an asset.
Excellent analytical, editing, communication, writing, proof-reading and online research skills with strong attention to detail
Practical knowledge of a range of applications and software including content management systems, social media platforms, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop and others as required.
Excellent organisational and administrative skills, strong attention to detail
Ability to exercise sound judgment and multitask while working independently and under pressure
Understanding of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic development issues. Experience in/knowledge of any of the following regions: Europe, Central Asia and Africa an asset.
Diplomacy and proven ability to work with people from various cultures and backgrounds
Must be eligible to work in Canada
