ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 3 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington DC, across Europe, and in Africa. This position will work out of our DC location, under the direction of the Policy Director for Multilateral Institutions.
The Research Assistant will work as part of the policy team to provide the most up-to-date, fact-based policy and research available on issues central to ONE’s mission, including global health, agriculture & food security, transparency and governance, private sector development, trade & investment and will additionally provide in-depth research on issues related to the development of a post-2015 agenda for development. This position will entail a balance between supporting the policy team’s immediate requirements and helping to support the development of ONE’s medium to long-term policy positions on the evolution of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct quantitative and qualitative research in support of ONE’s global policy objectives and priorities and contribute writing assistance to the policy team on MDG related issues
Assist in the production of briefing materials and maintain policy fact database and document library ensuring that they include the most up-to-date information available
Read and digest relevant policy reports and media coverage of specific issues and provide summary analysis on content and tone
Track, monitor and follow the progress of projects and action items that stem from the Director
Attend policy-relevant seminars and workshops, and consolidate relevant information for consumption by the policy team
Represent ONE at meetings and conferences on specific policy topics, as needed
Provide general administrative assistance as needed by the Director
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor’s required, preferably in economics, international affairs, or development-related field and 2 years relevant experience
Excellent research, writing, and statistical analysis skills. Strong quantitative and Excel skills are a must.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads
Ability to synthesize certain policy documents with eye to key points and relevance to ONE
Quick turnaround research skills—must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience
Generally very well-organized; proven ability to multi-task
Familiarity and understanding of international development issues and interest/experience in Africa strongly preferred
Previous work experience in Africa and/or international development a plus
