MEDIA ADVISORY
CANADIAN ETHNOCULTURAL COUNCIL
BIENNIAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Ottawa, May 27, 2004 Canadian Ethnocultural Council,
Canada's only coalition of ethnocultural organizations is holding
its Biennial General Assembly, in Toronto, at the Valhalla Inn on
May 29 and 30, 2004. Outgoing President, Art Hagopian noted that
after 25 years in existence, the CEC's role is as important as ever.
"Cultural communities must have a venue to come together to
share common issues and support the vision of Canada as a multicultural
nation. Our country's strength is in our diversity. We hope that
this vision is equally a part of the leadership of this country."
said Mr. Hagopian.
The Hon. Joseph Volpe, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development
will be addressing the delegates at 11:45 am on Saturday, May 29.
Representatives of other Federal Parties will also be speaking to
the General Assembly.
The CEC is a coalition of over 30 national ethnocultural organizations
which in turn represent over 2,000 local chapters across Canada.
Its mandate is to work towards the elimination of racism and to
promote the understanding of the multicultural reality of Canada
as defined in The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and The
Canadian Multiculturalism Act.
