Pillitteri
Estates Captures Second Straight Win
at Syrah du Monde Wine Competition
May
27, 2008
Ampius, France/Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada For a second year
in a row, Pillitteri Estates Shiraz Icewine has been named one of
the "Top Ten Syrahs" in the world at the "Syrah du
Monde" wine competition, held in Ampuis France May 15-16, 2008.
Pillitteri Estates
Winery won a Gold Medal for its 2006 Shiraz Icewine and last year
also won gold for the 2004. This year's win was made even sweeter
as the Shiraz ranked high among the "Top Ten" in the world
by scoring the top 2nd best mark of all 384 samples provided. Pillitteri's
Winemaster Dr. Marc Bradshaw comments "Receiving this accolade
for my 2006 Shiraz Icewine is absolutely brilliant and totally unexpected,
especially for a wine I made in my first vintage as Winemaster at
Pillitteri Estates."
Shiraz Icewine
is almost an oxymoron considering the intense heat required to produce
outstanding Shiraz coupled with the deadly cold required for Icewine.
This contradiction brings to light one of the many reasons why Canadian
Icewine is so special. Dr. Bradshaw continues, "I love the
challenge of producing Icewines, from the brutal and extreme harvest
at insane hours of the morning, to the most difficult ferments you've
ever dreamed of, where you're sure it will never reach the finish
line. It really makes it all the more sweeter when you watch the
wine go into bottle and onto the shelf. As a born and bred Aussie
winemaker, it only makes sense that I somehow involve myself with
the Shiraz varietal."
"Syrah
du Monde" organized by the Forum Oenologie enjoyed its second
successful year and has distinguished itself as a unique and exacting
competition. It is the only competition dedicated solely to the
evaluation of Syrah/Shiraz wines in all forms. The mantra of the
organization is to award reliable medals reflecting diversity, quality
and high standards. The competition follows strict compliance with
international wine competition rules, Quality Assurance requirements
and has enacted its own rigorous standards to ensure ideal tasting
conditions. Over the course of two days a rigorously selected panel
of international experts tasted 384 Syrah/Shiraz wines from 23 countries,
awarding 128 medals recognizing diversity and quality.
Nestled between
Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, Pillitteri Estates Winery
is a family owned and operated business founded in 1993. The winery
has been producing premium vitis vinifera and French hybrid grapes
for over fifty-five years on their Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyards.
The family's philosophy is simple: to produce the finest VQA wines
possible from the highest quality grapes grown in Niagara. This
approach has earned Pillitteri Estates over 450 international and
domestic medals reflecting the winery's commitment to producing
premium VQA wines. It has established itself as a leader in the
industry and is internationally recognized as a premium producer
of Icewine and one of the most innovative, using a wide range of
varietals. The winery currently exports to over 20 countries and
