Manufactured Landscapes

Baichwal, Jennifer

Year Published:  2006
Resource Type:  Film

Photographer Edward Burtynsky travels the world observing changes in landscapes due to industrial work and manufacturing.

Abstract:  The documentary follows Edward Burtynsky as he travels around the world photographing what he refers to as 'manufactured landscapes'; massive projects of modern civilization that tend to have devastating impacts on the surrounding environment. He visits e-waste dump sites in remote villages, huge factories that stretch on forever in the Fujian and Zhejiang provinces of China, a ship yard in Bangladesh where ships are recycled, dump sites where children pick through garbage looking for metals, and the biggest dam ever built by humans, the Three Gorges Dam, which has displaced over a million people. The film questions our place in the world and exposes the full impact of human activity on the earth. 90 mins.
