Study of an immigrant family's life as homesteaders in P.E.I. and its opposition to encroaching corporate demands.

Abstract:  This film is a true study of an immigrant family's life as homesteaders in Summerside P.E.I. It shows how, in their work of farming, fishing and freelance film-making, they become involved in the struggles of the local people. The family teaches their children at home instead of sending them to school and helps two rural communities resist a centralization program by keeping their one room schools open. The major issue studied in the film is that of public participation. The father takes the federal government to court after the Department of Regional Economic Expansion builds a Waterfront Mall, Office Building and Yacht Club without the required public consultation and over the opposition of local businessmen. It is a sensitive study of one family's attempt to determine their own destiny, seek justice with their neighbours and preserve rural values in the face of expanding corporate demands.
