Pioneer in bilingualism education honoured by French Embassy

For Immediate Release

(OTTAWA, October 23, 2003) - Pat Webster, founding President of Canadian Parents for French, will be awarded the Ordre national de mÉrite (National Order of Merit) by the French Embassy in Ottawa, on October 24th, 2003 at 5 PM. Webster receives the honour for her work in establishing an organization dedicated to promoting and creating French-second-language opportunities for young Canadians across the country. The Ordre, created in 1963 by the French government, is awarded for distinguished civic, public or military accomplishments by an individual.

A native of the southern United States, Pat Webster became aware of the advantages of bilingualism upon her marriage and arrival in Canada. When a group of concerned parents from across Canada launched CPF in 1977, she was elected its first president. "Although I briefly studied French in high school, I never dreamed that I would end up promoting its use in Canada" says Mrs Webster. "My main motivation was always my five children. I wanted the opportunity for them and all Canadian children to learn both official languages."

Mrs Webster has been a member of the Ontario government's French Language Services Commission, a Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Society of Education Visits and Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC) and most recently, has helped to build a national bilingual student literary program through the Montreal-based multilingual international literary festival, Metropolis Bleu.

Canadian Parents for French is the national network of volunteers that values French as an integral part of Canada and which is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French-second-language learning opportunities for young Canadians.
