Disability Expert to Address Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Alone

Dr. Mark Nagler, Ph.D. to Speak at CANGRANDS Conference on July 29

Hamilton, ON – July 5, 2004 – Dr. Mark Nagler knows what it means to battle the odds. Now he is bringing his story and expertise to many Canadian grandparents battling odds of their own: raising grandchildren alone, with little income or help from the biological parents.

CANGRANDS, a grassroots internet support group that connects these kin caregivers across Canada, is hosting its yearly Canadian grandparent conference and camp this summer. At this event, Dr. Mark Nagler,
Ph.D. will be presenting his popular workshop entitled, "Parenting a Child with Disabilities".

Dr. Mark Nagler was born with Cerebral Palsy. He did not learn to walk until he was five years old and has never been able to write. His parents were powerful advocates who insisted that their son have a fully integrated public school education at a time when most students with his level of disabilities were institutionalized.

In spite of his disabilities he was able to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, a Master's degree from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from Stirling University in Great Britain. Professor Nagler taught for four years at McMaster University and then embarked on a distinguished twenty nine year career at Renison College, University of Waterloo.

His address to these grandparents will include strategies and valuable advice on:

  • eliminating barriers to education
  • contacting the right people and organizations for help
  • the importance of advocacy
  • finding the appropriate health care professionals
  • managing your finances and your child's long-term security
  • arranging for respite care to prevent your own "burnout".

Dr. Nagler's presentations weave personal experience and humour with expert knowledge of people living with disabilities and their daily lives. The conference will be held from July 28 to August 2. For more information on CANGRANDS conference events and workshops visit www.cangrands.com.
