Peggy Nash on NDP Policy on Nuclear Weapons Abolition

July 31, 2012

M.P. Peggy Nash, Finance critic for the New Democratic Party, will outline the NDP’s policy on nuclear weapons abolition at a Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration August 9 (Nagasaki Day) at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto.

Nash will discuss what an NDP government would do to implement the unanimous all-party resolution passed by Parliament in 2010 that called on the Government of Canada to join negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention. The resolution called on the Government to ‘deploy a major world-wide Canadian diplomatic initiative in support of preventing nuclear proliferation and increasing the rate of nuclear disarmament.’

The commemoration, ‘Toronto for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World,’ is organized by the Hiroshima Day Coalition and will begin at 6:15 at the Church of the Holy Trinity behind the Eaton Centre.

Other commemoration participants include Ilario Maiolo, Senior Legal Advisor, Humanitarian Issues, for the Canadian Red Cross; Joe Ohori, Atomic Bomb Survivor; Joy Kogawa, author and activist; the Yakudo Drummers, the Soka Gakkai Youth Choir; the Raging Grannies and Flautist Ron Korb.

The events is free and open to the public. For further information, please consult the Hiroshima Day Coalition website
