Say YES to the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons

December 5, 2016

Canadian Voice of Women for Peace calls on Canada to change its vote to yes, and support Resolution L.41 at the General Assembly, signalling its intent to contribute constructively to the discussions to be launched in March 2017.
Canada will cast a vote very soon in the United Nations General Assembly on Resolution L.41 calling for the negotiation of a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading toward their total elimination.

Canada should vote YES to this resolution and contribute constructively to the negotiations once they begin.

Background:
Co-sponsored by 57 nations, UN Resolution L41 calls for a conference ‘to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination’. It was adopted on October 27, 2016 with 123 in favour, 16 abstentions, and 38 against, including Canada along with the United States, France, Israel, Russia, and the United Kingdom. There will be a further chance to indicate a yes vote at the next General Assembly vote on this historic effort in December 2016.
