Tyndale University College will host a public lecture, "Emotional and Spiritual Recovery from Addiction: Testing Secular & Spiritual Forgiveness Therapies" which will be delivered by Dr. Kenneth Hart, an expert whose research involves the three-way interface of clinical-health psychology, positive psychology and addictive behaviours. This free public lecture will be held on April 12, from 1:15pm - 2:30pm. at Tyndale University College in Room 2085. At the public lecture, Dr. Hart, psychology professor in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Windsor, will present evidence to show that addicts who practice forgiveness enjoy a life-enhancing quality of recovery and that alcoholics who are struggling to stay sober can be taught how to forgive. Dr. Hart's therapeutic intervention study compares the well-known Enright Forgiveness Program (EFP; Enright & Fitzgibbons, 2000) with a new Spiritual Forgiveness & Repentance (SPIRIT-FR) program. Modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the SPIRIT-FR program facilitates the search for spiritual meaning by encouraging clients to engage in forgiveness and repentance-related aspects of the AA ‘steps’ program. "The ‘cancer of bitterness’ is destructive for the mind, body and soul of angry people in 12-Step recovery from addiction. It also ruins relationships to others and to God. Perhaps forgiveness can serve as an antidote for ‘white-knuckled’ abstinence, " says Dr. Hart. "Research findings showed that participants in both treatment programs enjoyed long-term benefits in terms of their ability to forgive their worst offender and in terms of their motivational readiness to repent for their own transgressions. The sustained improvement on forgiveness was greater for clients in the SPIRIT-FR condition." Currently, Dr. Hart is collaborating with Dr. Paul Wong, psychology professor at Tyndale University College, among others, to plan a CIHR grant application. If successful, the grant will fund a clinical trial to study the comparative benefits of exposing recovering alcoholics to brief motivational interventions designed to prevent relapse following discharge from professional treatment. Stability may be good for economies and families, but it’s bad for sand dunes. Active sand dunes and associated habitats are disappearing across the Canadian prairies. These habitats support diverse com-munities of specialized and rare plants and animals, many of which are at risk of extinction in Canada. In the Middle Sand Hills of Alberta, as much as 90 percent of exposed sand dunes has been vegetated in the last 75 years, and complete stabilization of all dunes is predicted by 2014. Some contributing factors to this change may be shifts in climate, the loss of large grazers, and human land use practices.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary the Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival is produced annually by Workman Arts in Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The festival promotes awareness of mental illness and brings together programmers from various perspectives including people with mental health and addiction issues, health care providers, educators and industry professionals. Sixth Annual Conference on Peace Education in Canada For the past six years, the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace (CCTP) has worked in partnership with the McMaster Centre for Peace Studies to facilitate the Annual Conferences on Peace Education in Canada. These conferences provide opportunities for educators from all sectors (formal schools, NGO’s, the private sector, government, etc.) to collaborate, learn, exchange knowledge and develop critical skills for promoting peace through education in Canada and abroad. This year’s conference will focus upon the theme of “Cultivating Sustainable Learning Communities�. Particular emphasis will be placed upon: developing a core community/network of peace educators within Canada; discussing and developing action plans for addressing shared challenges; and building critical skills for community involvement. To achieve this, the conference is expanding this year -- containing three main forums in addition to other events. The three forums include the Community Leadership Forum, the Youth Peace Forum, and the Plenary Forum. This conference is about the education of our children in the principles and practice of peace. Peace is the most urgent item on the agenda of humanity. No civilization is truly progressive without education and no education system is truly civilizing unless it is based on the universal principles of peace. However, peace is absent everywhere. In schools, families, and neighborhoods episodes of bullying, conflict, violence, and destructive behaviour are alarmingly high. In places of work, high levels of tension, rivalry, and mistrust exacts enormous personal and economic expense. At the international level, monumental insecurities, inequities, conflicts, and violence based on political, racial, ethnic, and religious differences are bringing untold calamities to the masses of humanity—children, youth, and adults alike. In the final analysis, education is the most effective and universal tool for changing this unsettling state of affairs and for preparing every new generation of children and youth to learn the principles of peace and skills of peacebuilding. The central aim of the EFP Conference is to create a forum in which all stakeholders in peace and education will have an opportunity to learn from one another and consult together on how to create safe and healthy learning environments with three fundamental properties: To achieve this, the conference program is bringing together peace education experts, government leaders, education leaders, educators, and peace practitioners to review the latest developments in the field of peace education, consult together on how these new insights could be incorporated into government education policies and priorities; and consider how these insights could be translated into practical pedagogical applications in classrooms and schools.

Affordable housing is a powerful positive contributor to the health of Toronto's economy, environment, neighbourhoods and residents. But for some 200,000 families and individuals, affordable housing is a rapidly fading dream. A shocking number of people including single-parent families and low-income earners, Aboriginal and disabled persons, young people and seniors are living in sub-standard or over-crowded housing. They often pay more than 50 per cent of their income on rent. Home ownership is certainly not within their financial reach. Indeed many are in danger of losing their homes.

The Ontario Expert Commission on Pensions (OECP) – formed by the Ontario Government last November – has been spending the last several months conducting province wide consultations among stakeholders and commissioning research projects to review the Ontario pension system. Our December 2007 ImpACT session will focus on some of the more significant trends and initiatives in the regulation and operation of pension plans that will likely appear as major themes in the stakeholder submissions to the OECP and will no doubt have an influence on its final recommendations.

The Sierra Club Chinook Group hosts a monthly meeting series on the 1st Wed. of every month from 7 to 9 pm at the Calgary Area Outdoor Council at 1111 Memorial Drive NW. Michael Franti, world renowned musician and human rights worker, travels to Iraq, Palestine and Israel to explore the human cost of war with a group of friends, some video cameras and his guitar. A compelling soundtrack, visual and musical montages, and Franti's intimate voiceovers make the film speak to the MTV, X, Y, and Z generations, as well as to baby boomers. A true armchair travel film pulling the audience into these war zones in the company of Michael's guitar, eloquence and wit - you feel the humanity, artistic resilience and sometimes horrific experience of what it's like to live under the bombs and military occupation.

Longstanding environmental champion Charles Caccia will give a timely public presentation at the Walter Baker Sports Centre in Barrhaven on Thursday, December 6 (7-9pm), on the challenges of sustainable development in our problematic environmental and economic world. The presentation is sponsored by the Nepean Carleton Federal Liberal Association (NCFLA) as part of its community service outreach efforts. Currently a Senior Fellow for the Institute of the Environment at the University of Ottawa and an active member of the City of Ottawa's Environmental Advisory Committee, Mr. Caccia is well known for his environmental advocacy during a 36 year tenure in parliament, most of which involved important ministerial cabinet posts.

Threads of Life, an Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support, will hold its fifth annual Steps for Life walk to raise awareness of injury prevention and fundraise to support families suffering from workplace tragedies. If you are unable to participate in any of these three locations, you can now Adopt-a-Walker to participate in the event to honour your loved one. The walker will wear a photo of your loved one. Events are in Hamilton, Thunder Bay, Toronto and Sudbury. Threads of Life is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping families affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease along their journey of healing. The 5K walk is non-competitive.
