In County Durham, a previously thriving mining community in Northern England that has since fallen upon hard times, landlord TJ Ballantyne struggles to sustain the community's last remaining pub and public social space, The Old Oak. When a group of Syrian refugees unexpectedly arrive and seek asylum within the community, tensions rise and The Old Oak becomes a contested space among locals who are reluctant to change within their community; however, Ballantyne soon strikes up an unlikely friendship with a refugee named Yara.
