B.C. Book Prizes


Deadline: December, annually

Eligibility: Eligible individuals will have lived in British Columbia for three of the last five years. Work may have been published anywhere in the world. The work must be originally copyrighted in the preceding calendar year. Three copies of each book must be submitted along with a $25 per title submission fee.

Value: $2,000 for each of the six prizes.

Description: Haig-Brown Regional Prize -- Awarded to the author of the book which contributes most to the enjoyment and understanding of British Columbia. The book may deal with any aspect of the province (people, history, geography, oceanography, etc.) and must be original. Author may reside outside B.C. and the book may have been published anwhere. Bill Duthie Bookseller's Choice Prize -- Presented to the originating publisher and author(s) of the best book in terms of public appeal, initiative, design, production and content. The publisher must have its head office in B.C. or the Yukon and the creative control in terms of editing, design and production must have been within B.C. or the Yukon. The membership of the B.C. Booksellers' Association determines the winner by ballot. Supported by BCBA and Duthie Books. Hubert Evans Non-fiction Prize -- Awarded to the author of the best work of non-fiction (philosophy, belles lettres, biography, history, etc.). Quality of research and writing are major considerations in the judging of this prize, as are insight and originality. The writer must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the last five years. The book may have been published anywhere. Supported by British Columbia Library Services. Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize -- Awarded to the author of the best work of fiction. The author must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. No anthologies or "best of" collections. The book may have been published anywhere. supported by Friesen, Best Book Manufactures, Webcom and Hignell printers. Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize -- Awarded to a B.C./Yukon author for best work of poetry. Supported by the B.C. Teachers' Federation. Sheila A. Egoff Children's Prize -- Awarded to the author of the best book written for young people aged 16 and under. It is judged on content, whether text or illustration, and orginality. The author and/or illustrator must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. Supported by the B.C. Library Association.
