Ontario Doctors' Group expects
swift end to extra-billing
May 5, 1985
The Medical Reform Group of Ontario announced today that it expected
the government to table legislation in the next session to outlaw
physician extra-billing. The legislature now contains a majority
of members from the Liberal and New Democratic Parties who campaigned
against this odious practice. The people of Ontario demonstrated
clearly on May 2nd their resistance to Premier Miller's support
of the Ontario Medical Association's position. It is not just the
Ontario citizens who are extra-billed who are financially pressed.
All Ontarioans suffer because of the $50 million penalty against
extra-billing that Ottawa levied with the Canada Health Act passed
in 1984. The Medical Reform Group, which represents 150 physicians,
has urged an end to extra-billing since the group's establishment
in 1979.
