Organic Trade Association applauds
federal investments in organic sector
(Truro, NS, December 3, 2007) - The Organic Trade Association today
applauded significant investments in the organic sector by the federal
government. These investments include seed funding for the Organic
Federation of Canada (OFC), a national stakeholder representative
body for the sector, and for the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada
(OACC), a world-renown research facility for the study of organic
agriculture.
"We're very pleased," said Matthew Holmes, managing director
of the Organic Trade Association (OTA) in Canada, "this is
something we've been working towards for many years. The demand
for organic products is growing so fast: it's wonderful to see the
federal government responding by investing in this important market
sector. The money announced today will establish a strong national
representative body for the sector, while also helping us to have
more information on the market drivers behind the growth we've been
enjoying."
"The grant from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will help
build on existing organic networks right across the country,"
said Stephanie Wells, President of the Organic Federation of Canada
and trade representative on OFC for the Organic Trade Association.
"The Federation is very pleased that the funding supports the
recent hiring of a national coordinator to ensure strong communication
and effective action.
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is the membership-based business
association for the organic industry in North America, with offices
in the U.S. and Canada. OTA's mission is to promote and protect
the growth of organic trade to benefit the environment, farmers,
the public, and the economy. OTA's vision is that organic products
are a significant part of everyday life, enhancing people's lives
and the global environment.
