News Release: Hike to Help

"Hike to Help"

Calgary, Alberta. Eighteen year old Kyle Ballantyne from Kingston, Ontario is taking a "Hike to Help". From September 1-11, 2004, Kyle will be hiking the Rideau Canal Trail to increase awareness of Down syndrome.

Kyle, whose six year old brother Jacob has Down syndrome, will start the 11 day hike in Kingston and finish in Ottawa. "My goal is to increase Canadian's awareness of Down syndrome." stated Kyle, an avid hiker. Kyle will be joined on September 4 by Jacob who will hike the Pine Haven to Westport portion of the trail.

"I want people to know that the 35,000 Canadians with Down syndrome, including my brother Jacob have a lot to offer our country. They deserve the respect of all Canadians. This hike is just my way of showing support for my brother."

Established in 1987, the Canadian Down Syndrome Society is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta that offers advocacy, education and information to those impacted by Down syndrome including families, educators, community support workers and health care providers.
