Medical Reform Group of Ontario
News Release

July 25, 1983

The Medical Reform Group of Ontario is pleased that the Federal government has published a position paper on Medicare, with a commitment to introduce a Canada Health Act in the fall. We agree wholeheartedly with the broad principles as stated in the paper, and specifically with its condemnation of user fees and extra-billing. The mechanisms by which these practices might be prevented are not spelled out in sufficient detail in the position paper for comment, but we hope that the Act itself will be strong enough to create a single-class health care system which fully embodies the principle of unrestricted access to necessary care by all Canadians. We also note that introduction of the Act Into Parliament will not guarantee its passage intact before the next election. We therefore urge Members of Parliament, health care workers, and Canadians in general to support the passage of a strong Canada Health Act.
