Tastes of Heaven Gala: April 19, 2012; Archbishop Sutton to receive 2012 St. Joseph Award

April 18, 2012

Toronto - An archbishop who saw the re-evangelization of the North in terms of presenting the Gospel in a form that answers today's need in poor and remote missions will receive Catholic Missions In Canada's St. Joseph Award at the Tastes of Heaven Gala on April 19.

Archbishop Peter Sutton, O.M.I., Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas, will be presented the award for organizing a mobile renewal team that brought the Gospel to the Northern communities. He gave priority to religious education, especially adult religious education and catechesis for all ages in the two dioceses he has served. He also launched a successful diocesan-wide Renew Program which inspired faith-sharing among missionaries and lay people.

Keynoting the Gala is guest speaker Oblate Bishop Reynald Rouleau of the Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay.

Catholic Missions In Canada's annual Tastes of Heaven Gala will be held at The Liberty Grand, Exhibition Place, in Toronto. All money raised by the Gala will go to benefit Catholic Missions In Canada.

In 1908, Catholic Missions In Canada was established to foster and extend the blessings of the Catholic faith in the poorest dioceses throughout the Dominion of Canada.

That missionary work continues today, more than 100 years later, providing $4 million to 28 dioceses, and affecting the lives of 1 million Catholics across our great country.

Over the last 11 years, the Catholic Business Community has generously supported Catholic Missions In Canada?s Gala, raising over $1,138,000 through this signature event.

Support of the Tastes of Heaven Gala has helped to fund:

* First Nations Ministry in the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan through the support of 3 missionary priests and 3 religious sisters working in remote reserves in Northern Alberta?offering the sacraments and faith education to children and adults

* The building of 2 mission churches in the Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories and renovating a rectory to accommodate a St. Vincent De Paul store and a seniors' drop-in.

* Travel expenses of the bishop and 4 priests -- all over the age of 70 -- to minister throughout the Diocese of Moosonee, an area of 1.2 million sq km in Northern Ontario and Quebec.

* The education of seminarians and lay leaders in the Saskatchewan Diocese of Prince Albert.
