Over 40 Nova Scotia housing co-ops
to host national conference

May 28, 2003

“It has been well worth the time and energy spent to put together a conference of this size,” says Sherri MacDonald, a member of Kabuki Housing Co-operative in Halifax. For the past year, MacDonald has been working with other local volunteers to prepare for the annual meeting of the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada. That work will become even more intense June 4 - 7, when 800 delegates from housing co-operatives across Canada will arrive at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax.

“Being a member of the planning committee for the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada’s annual meeting has given me an understanding of the scope and breath of co-operative housing on a national level,” she says. “I am looking forward to meeting folks from across Canada and showing off the attractions of Nova Scotia!”

There are 88 housing co-ops in Nova Scotia, representing over 1,900 households. The Nova Scotia government, through the Housing Services Division of the Department of Community Services, is providing bursaries to make it possible for many local co-op members to attend the annual meeting and participate in the more than 75 workshops and seminars being offered.

There are over 90,000 units of co-operative housing across Canada, providing homes to 250,000 low and middle-income people. Co-ops are built under federal or provincial programs, with subsidies to assist members who need it with their housing costs. Co-ops are managed by the residents themselves, making this type of housing different from public or private non-profit housing.

CHF Canada is the national association of housing co-operatives,
representing over 850 non-profit housing co-operatives and other members.
This annual meeting marks the federation’s 35th anniversary.
