ChÉ Guevara's Daughter in Toronto
Speaking on Terrorism and Human Rights

For Immediate Release

(September 17, 2003, Toronto) - Dr. Aleida Guevara March, ChÉ Guevara's daughter, and Irma Gonzalez, the teen-aged daughter of Rene Gonzalez, will be featured at a press conference held at Toronto City Hall, Members' Lounge, Queen and Bay, Toronto, on Monday, September 29, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Rene Gonzalez is one of the Cuban Five anti-terrorists jailed in the United States for investigating Miami-based terrorist groups and attempting to prevent terrorist activity against Cuba.

Livio Di Celmo, a Canadian from Montreal, will also be present to speak about the death of his brother, Fabio, in Havana on September 4, 1997, when a terrorist bomb exploded in a tourist hotel -- just one of hundreds of victims murdered by terrorists operating with impunity from the United States.

Guevara and Gonzalez will be speaking in Toronto about the case of the Cuban Five, human rights, and the war on terrorism as part of across-Canada tour coordinated by the Canadian Network on Cuba. The Network is also conducting a national campaign for signatures on a petition to Prime Minister ChrÉtien calling for the Prime Minister to openly intervene with the U.S. government on behalf of the Cuban Five.

Well-known lawyers in Toronto such as Paul Copeland, Juan Carranza, Rocco Galati, Osgoode Hall Professor Emeritus Harry Glasbeek, Mary Boyce, Lorne Gershuny and others have organized a Lawyers' Committee to challenge the false conviction of the Five for their anti-terrorist activities. The lawyers have also protested the human rights violations perpetrated against the Five during their imprisonment.

The Free the Cuban Five Committee - Toronto, which actively pursues support for the Five, will welcome the Cuban visitors at Pearson International Airport, Terminal 3, arrivals level, on Sunday, September 28, around 5:30 p.m. The media are invited to attend.

A public meeting to hear the two visitors will be held at the OISE Auditorium, 252 Bloor Street West, on Monday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m.

A press kit is available upon request.
