Toronto-based professor, author and consultant G. Ross Lawford, PhD, was just honored by his receipt of ForeWord Magazine's 2002 Book of the Year Gold Award for his book The Quest for Authentic Power: Getting Past Manipulation, Control and Self-Limiting Beliefs at the latest Book Expo America (BEA) held recently in Los Angeles. The award was given in the Self Help/Psychology category. Drawing on his research in psychology, theology, and business, Lawford outlines in The Quest for Authentic Power a new view of power--one that does not define power by authority, control, and status--and provides practical pointers for those wishing to begin a more satisfying and effective approach to developing and maintaining authentic and lasting power. Authentic power--the power to consistently obtain what we truly desire--comes from within. Such power, the power to determine your own destiny, isn't achieved by imposing your will on others. In fact, Ross Lawford explains, power based on authority, control, and status is not only ineffective, it is usually short-lived.

The Quest for Authentic Power:

* Presents a new concept of power that will help readers achieve their deepest desires without resorting to manipulation, coercion, or intimidation

* Shows how conventional beliefs about power actually prevent us from being truly powerful

* Recommends strategies for applying this new view of power in a variety of settings--at work, within one's family, and in our personal relationships

Ross Lawford was a member of the faculty at McMaster University before assuming executive positions, first within a large manufacturing and retail conglomerate and later as president of ORTECH International, a large technical services firm. Building on his skills as a facilitator, mentor and coach, in 1993 he founded the consulting practice Ross Lawford and Associates with a focus on helping others lead fuller, healthier and more meaningful lives both personally and professionally. His work includes facilitating visioning, conflict resolution, and lifestyle changes that foster individual effectiveness, stress reduction and overall well being. Lawford works in both private and corporate settings. He is available for keynote addresses.
