See the Ability: National Down Syndrome Awareness Week is November 1-7, 2011

October 25, 2011

CALGARY – October 25, 2011. The Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) is proud to announce National Down Syndrome Awareness Week (NDSAW), November 1-7, 2011. National Down Syndrome Awareness Week celebrates the lives of Canadians with Down syndrome, who are going to school, working, getting married and making important contributions to Canada.

The CDSS's affiliate groups will celebrate NDSAW with community events such as the Buddy Walk. Representatives from the CDSS will participate at some of these events, including the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society's Buddy Walk on November 6, 2011.

Also during this week some of the CDSS community will come together in Toronto to discuss and plan for the continued success of CDSS as we enter our 25th anniversary in 2012. They will be joined by the VATTA Committee, a group of adults with Down syndrome who believe that through their efforts, equitable opportunities will be available for all Canadians.

“National Down Syndrome Awareness Week is a public awareness campaign focusing on the unique strengths and abilities of people with Down syndrome,” says Kirk Crowther, the Executive Director of CDSS. “It gives Canadians the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions made by people with Down syndrome everyday in our schools, communities, workplaces and families.”

The CDSS is the primary contact for Canadian media regarding information about Down syndrome, inclusion and social justice. The CDSS is proud to be the voice of Canadians with Down syndrome and their families.
