ANHRI releases annual report on freedom of expression in the Arab world in 2011

July 12, 2012

Cairo, 13 June 2012 - ANHRI has released its annual report for 2011, under the title Freedom of Expression in the Arab World. The regional report is the first that ANHRI has prepared on freedom of expression in Egypt and the Arab world coming in the aftermath of the Arab Spring revolutions.

The 184-page report addresses the mutual influence between freedom of expression and the revolutions of the Arab Spring. It attempts to document the progress of freedom of expression by introducing key aspects of positive and negative developments that accompanied the revolutions.

The report addresses 15 countries broken down into three chapters:

Chapter One: Countries of the revolutions - includes the countries where revolutions took place, namely Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Bahrain and Yemen.

Chapter Two: Countries underway - covers countries on their way to catching up with the Arab Spring, namely Algeria, Kuwait, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Sudan.

Chapter Three: The obstacle - addresses the country that represents an obstacle to democracy and freedom of expression, namely Saudi Arabia.

It is ANHRI's intention to issue the annual report on a yearly basis, barring unforeseen circumstances beyond the organisation's control that may prevent its production.

The cover of the report illustrates an image of Pearl Square, in the Bahraini capital of Manama. This square was the cradle of the revolution in Bahrain. The Bahraini authorities destroyed the square in an attempt to change geography and erase history.

ANHRI dedicates this report to those who supported the revolutions and the move to well-deserved democracy by sacrificing their lives, suffering injuries, shouting chants, writing in support, posting a picture on Facebook or spreading news and information on Twitter.
