The Grinch Who Closed Child Care Programs
December 17, 2014
This holiday season, the Association of Day Care Operators of Ontario (ADCO) is encouraging parents to send a strong message to Minister Sandals at Bill10.ca to stop the closure of more child care programs in Ontario.
Ontario families have already seen the closure of many licensed child care centres in the last year, which has forced hundreds of parents to search for new child care arrangements. The Governments newly passed Child Care Modernization Act will put further pressure on a child care system that is already in crisis and is likely to force many more high quality child care programs to close.
Andrea Hannen, speaking on behalf of the Association of Day Care Operators of Ontario, noted parents all over Ontario are either scrambling to make new child care arrangements, or are stressed out wondering if their child care program will be the next to go. This is the last thing families need during the holiday season. Too many Ontarians in the last year have lost work days and countless hours of sleep due to day care centres closing down.
By cutting short debate and consultation on Bill 10, the Minister has forced Ontario families to live with flawed child care legislation that is almost certain to force the closure of even more high quality child care programs. As these programs are eliminated, longer wait lists and higher costs for child care are almost certain to follow. We are calling on the Government of Ontario to amend the Child Care Modernization Act to make sure that it respects the choices of Ontario parents. Ms. Hannen further explained.
