IFJ welcomes release of Iranian journalist and repeats its appeal for freedom of association in Iran

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomes the release of journalist and Association of Iranian journalists (AoIJ)'s board member Aliezra Rajaee on 26 October. The Federation calls on Iranian authorities to reopen the offices of its affiliate in Iran.Alireza Rajaee, a journalist working for former Iranian newspaper Khordad , was held in prison since April 2011 on charges of acting against national security.
"We congratulate Alireza, his family and his union on his release,” said IFJ President Jim Boumelha. “Iranian judicial system must take all necessary steps to release the rest of imprisoned journalists who are held without fair trial. We also raise our extreme concerns over the infringement by Iranian authorities of journalists’ fundamental right to organise in the country".
To date, 9 journalists are still in jail:
1-Mostafa Tajzade, freelancer political analyst and writer (since June 2009)
2- Adnan Hasanpour , freelance journalist, (since Feb 2006)
3- Mohammad Seddighkabodvand , freelance journalist, (since June 2007)
4- Saeed Madani, freelance journalist, (since January 2012)
5- Saeid Razavifaghih, freelance journalist, (since March 2013)
6- Serajodin Mirdamadi , freelance journalist, (since May 2014)
7- Hossain noraninejad, freelance journalist, (since May 2015)
8- Kivan Mehreghan , freelance journalist, (since Septeber 2015)
9- Jeyson Rezaeian , freelance journalist, (since July 2013)
On 9 October, the IFJ sent a letter to the Iranian government demanding the reopening of the offices of the AoIJ which are closed since 2009. The IFJ argue that the offices were closed unlawfully in August 2009 without any justifications and in violation of the Iranian national laws as well as ILO and other international conventions related to labour rights and freedom of association.
