Canadian Nudist History Book Published

Toronto, June 2, 2003

The Federation of Canadian Naturists is proud to announce the publishing of
Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada.

This incredibly thorough historical record was assembled by Dr. James Woycke, a history professor at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Woycke spent more than a decade researching the history of Canadian nudism from Newfoundland to Vancouver island and in the USA. He reviewed nearly a century of magazines, records, and correspondence of nudist clubs and organizations. In addition to those thousands of documents, he also interviewed dozens of naturists from Canadian and Canadian-American clubs. The result is a fascinating look, going back to the early 20th century, into the often controversial development of nudism as it challenged Canadian legal and social norms.

A few facts:
*1918* - The earliest club in Welland, Ontario
*1925* - the second club in Edmonton, Alberta
*1930* - The earliest informal vaction camps and freebeaches on Vanvouver Island
*Quebec* - The site of the only prosecution of nudism in Canada. But nudists had the last laugh: after the Quiet Revolution, Quebec became the most liberated province in the country with more and larger clubs and more free beaches than any other region of Canada.

As defined by the International Naturist Federation, Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging respect for oneself, respect for others and for the environment.

The Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) , with La FÉdÉration QuÉbÉcoise de Naturisme (FQN) constitute the national nudist organization in Canada. Internationally recognized by affiliation to the International Naturist Federation (INF) , we strive to:

* help naturists and nudist find how and where they can enjoy the naturist/nudist life
* represent the interests of Canadian naturist/nudist individuals, families, clubs, resorts, and organizations.

The International Naturist Federation (INF) represents naturists in over 30 countries. Founded in August 1953 at the Montalivet naturist resort in France and based in Belgium, it is dedicated to the world-wide acceptance of naturist ideals and lifestyle-recreational social nudism.
