Climate Fast News from The Hill

September 30, 2012

I am writing from the Fast for Climate Justice on Parliament Hill. We are now in our 10th day of a 12 day fast. We are here asking Canadians to urge their MPs to support three essential policy changes:

1) end fossil fuel subsidies
2) put a price on carbon
3) develop a renewable energy strategy for Canada.

The group has received the support of many individuals, organizations and some MP's. Maude Barlow has pledged her support and has just received a message from David Suzuki, who writes:
"There is a willful blindness on the part of our government that deliberately ignores the threat of climate change for all Canadians. Canada, of all industrialized nations, is at greatest risk of climate change's catastrophic consequences for our melting Arctic regions, rising marine waters along our coasts, climate dependent resources like agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and winter sports, and our economic future. Thank you for putting yourselves on the line to call for action of our government."

We encourage any kind of local actions on Gandhi's birthday, Oct 2nd, at 7:30 pm on Parliament Hill. On Salt Spring Island there will be a candlelight vigil Oct 1st, 7 pm, and in Toronto there will be a noon hour support demo on Oct 2nd. (Queen and John, noon) While 13 MPs have signed our pledge, no Liberals have yet signed and the only party leader to sign has been Elizabeth May. The public is encouraged to contact their local MP to urge them to sign, and to ask their party leader to sign.

Small acts, when multiplied, can transform the world. Let's transform this country together!
