Canada Revenue Agency employees named recipients of the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector

May 13, 2010

OTTAWA – May 11, 2010 – Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and the U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) congratulate Michel Bernard, Mary-Lee Clarke and Joan Reade (Section 5970 Project Team) from the Canada Revenue Agency, on being chosen as the recipients of the second annual Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector.

The Section 5970 Project Team was presented the award by CIPFA Chief Executive Steve Freer and CMA Canada President and CEO Joy Thomas, at a dinner sponsored by Carlson Wagonlit Travel to honour the winners and nominees, held last night at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa.

“We are pleased to congratulate the winning team for their commitment to maintaining a leadership role in high quality financial management and reporting,” said Steve Freer, Chief Executive of CIPFA. “Not only do they serve as a role model for others, but their high standards of performance will help position the Canada Revenue Agency for further success.”

The annual award is conferred to a federal public servant or team working in a government department or agency who has made a significant contribution to financial management and/or comptrollership within the Government of Canada.

This year’s featured speakers included Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada and James Ralston, Comptroller General of Canada. Both addressed the importance of innovation, the sharing of best practices and the role of financial management, and comptrollership in the Government of Canada

“The award provides well-deserved recognition for the dedication and hard work of our financial management professionals,” said James Ralston, Comptroller General of Canada. “I would like to thank CMA Canada and CIPFA for helping to celebrate excellence in an area that greatly contributes to accountability, prudence and the stewardship of taxpayers’ money.”

Also honoured at the dinner was Paul J. Gauvin, FCMA, who received the CMA-CIPFA Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been the chief financial officer in three of the largest federal organizations including Employment and Immigration Canada, Transport Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). His most recent assignment was special advisor to the commissioner of the RCMP.

“Paul’s leadership and contributions to the public sector throughout his career make him a worthy recipient of this honour,” said Bob Strachan, Chair, CMA Canada National Board of Directors.

Recent CMA-CPFA Program graduates were also honoured at the ceremony for their dedication to career progression and personal growth.
