Israel seizes Flotilla ship to Gaza and deports 2 Human Rights advocates to Canada

Two Canadians, Robert Lovelace and Kevin Neish, who were on board the Freedom Flotilla III boat Marianne, headed towards Gaza when it was seized by Israeli forces early Monday morning, are returning to Canada today. Israeli forces used an electric weapon against four Swedish crew members during their illegal seizure of vessel, which Israeli government sources described as “uneventful”. The two were held in an Israeli prison with seven other Flotilla participants from Sweden, Norway and Russia, until being transferred to Ben Gurion Airport late Wednesday. They are expected to land at Pearson International Airport at 6:55 pm,Thursday July 2.

Neish, a retired marine engineer from Victoria B.C., had been sailing with the Marianne since it left Sweden in early May. Lovelace, a Queen’s university professor and member of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation, joined the ship at its last port of call, Messina in Sicily on June 19.

“We are very happy to welcome home our two friends from their mission but we remain concerned about the six Swedish activists still in prison in Israel,” commented David Heap, spokesperson for the Canadian Boat to Gaza Campaign. “Even more than freedom for our international friends, we want to see the world demand freedom of movement for the 1.8 million Palestinians living in the open-air prison of Gaza.”

Ehab Lotayef, a Montreal engineer and writer, and Christian Martel, a retired trade-unionist from Québec, were among the internationals who participated in Freedom Flotilla III. They were on a different boat, the Rachel, which returns to Athens today. “Now we are focusing on future Flotillas to continue to challenge the blockade of Gaza,“ comments Lotayef. “The blockade must end completely and Palestinians must regain their full rights."

Israël saisit un bateau de la Flottille pour Gaza et expulse 2 militants canadiens pour les droits humains

Deux Canadiens, Robert Lovelace and Kevin Neish retournent au Canada après que leur bateau, le Marianne, un des bateaux de la Flottille de la liberté III qui se dirigeait vers Gaza, a été saisi tôt lundi matin par les Forces israéliennes. Ces dernières ont utilisé des armes électriques sur quatre Suédois membres de l’équipage lors de leur saisie illégale du bateau. Un porte-parole du gouvernement israélien a néanmoins caractérisé la saisie comme étant «sans incidents». Les deux Canadiens ont été détenus dans une prison israélienne avec sept autres participants de la Flottille issus de la Suède, de la Norvège et de Russie. Ils ont ensuite été transférés à l’aéroport Ben Gourion mercredi en soirée. L’arrivée de leur vol vers Toronto est prévue à 18h55, jeudi 2 juillet.

Neish, un mécanicien maritime à la retraite de Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, a été à bord du Marianne depuis son départ de la Suède au début du mois de mai. Lovelace, un professeur à l’Université Queen’s et un membre de la Première nation Ardoch algonquine, a embarqué à bord du Marianne le 19 juin dernier à Messine, en Sicile, son dernier port d’escale.

«Nous sommes très heureux d’accueillir au pays nos deux amis à leur retour de mission, mais nous sommes en même temps préoccupés parce que six militants suédois restent emprisonnés en Israël», dit David Heap, porte-parole de la campagne du Bateau canadien pour Gaza. «Bien entendu, nous voulons que nos amis internationaux soient libérés, mais nous voulons aussi que le monde entier exige la libération des 1.8 millions de Palestiniens de Gaza, privés de liberté de mouvement dans une véritable prison à ciel ouvert, celle de Gaza.»

Ehab Lotayef, un ingénieur et auteur de Montréal, et Christian Martel, un syndicaliste retraité de Québec, figuraient parmi les internationaux participants à la Flottille de la liberté III. Ils étaient à bord d’un autre bateau de la flottille, le Rachel, qui retourne aujourd’hui à Athènes. «Nous allons nous remettre au travail pour préparer d’autres flottilles pour continuer à défier le blocus de Gaza», dit Lotyef. «Il faut lever complètement le blocus et redonner aux Palestiniens l’ensemble de leurs droits.»
