Who wouldn't "like" to get something in return?

December 8, 2011

Toronto, December 7th, 2011 - Everyone has heard of 'give to get' and most people use this phrase in their networking. Forwarding leads and prospects is just one way of doing this. The idea is that by giving away something of value to the contact it reinforces the relationship and they are more likely to reciprocate in the future. This theory works in the world of social media as well.

"Many organizations set up a Facebook page or Twitter account and start broadcasting," says Randall Craig, Social Media and Web strategist and author of the Online PR and Social Media series, "They miss the part about offering content that prospects would value in exchange for his or her 'like'." This can be done on the welcome page of an organization's Facebook account.

Craig suggests offering content that highlights your expertise and knowledge, such as:
? Case Study
? White paper
? Infographic
? Video
? Podcast / Webcast
? Research report

There should always be a reason for someone to give his or her contact information and definitely include a call-to-action. By offering something unique to your organization or field of expertise, you are also qualifying that contact's interest to a certain extent. Maintaining the connection is how business is earned and prospects turn into clients.

Adds Craig: "I use this practice on my Facebook page to promote my web TV show, Professionally Speaking TV. Visitors are encouraged to 'like' the page and are then connected to our video archive of thought-leader interviews." This relatively new Facebook initiative for Randall Craig is paying off with new followers every week which support the viewing stats for his show's website.
