Social Media Check Box

November 14, 2012

Toronto, November 14, 2012 - "We've got that covered" is a very satisfying thing to say when you are asked what your organization is doing in the area of social media. Does your organization say this?

"Sadly," says Randall Craig, president of 108 ideaspace and author of the Online PR and Social Media series. "Our research, covering 400 different organizations across the country, shows this isn?t true." The question is why?

Too often, there isn't an adequate distinction between Social Media strategy, and the daily Social Media to-do list. Hiring a young person who is 'plugged in' will take care of the day-to-day, but does this person have the experience and acumen to set strategy? Or develop Social Media risk mitigation policies? Probably not.

Adds Craig, "If you really think your organization is covered, put it to the test. Ask a few social media questions, such as, what are the competitors doing? How is success measured? Can it be phased in? How has the plan worked in other agencies? What is the investment required? Set up a meeting with your Social Media person, and see how they answer."

At the individual level, the same question can be applied: have you been so focused on the doing, that you haven't properly set your strategy?

Since 1994, Randall Craig has advised on web and social media strategy. He is the author of six books including the Online PR and Social Media series. More information about Randall Craig can be found at
