Canada-Mexico Initiative identifies policy options to energize bilateral relationship
April 21, 2010
Experts gathered to develop policy options to scale up Canada-Mexico ties during a two-day meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Convened under the Canada-Mexico Initiative chaired by the Hon. Bill Graham and Mexican Senator Rosario Green Macas, they evaluated economic, political and people-to-people aspects of this bilateral relationship.
In Canada, negative media commentary or profound lack of knowledge about the extent of ties with Mexico often translate into lost opportunities for bilateral, North American, hemispheric and multilateral co-operation with Mexico, says Carlo Dade, executive director of Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL), the Ottawa-based think-tank that leads this initiative. Mexico is a strategic, like-minded partner in the Americas and our fifth bilateral trading partner. Canadians need to know this.
Members of the Canada-Mexico Initiative are continuing their dialogue with decision-makers to make the case for renewed co-operation with Mexico.
